Common Fault Diagnosis and Maintenance Methods of Mine Optical Fiber Junction Boxes

Mine optical fiber junction boxes are the core connection components of the optical fiber communication system in underground mines, undertaking the key functions of optical fiber connection, signal transmission and protection. The underground environment is harsh, and factors such as dust, moisture, high pressure and impact are likely to cause failures of the junction box, affecting communication stability and even leading to potential safety hazards. Mastering the common fault diagnosis and maintenance methods is an important prerequisite for ensuring unobstructed mine communication. Combining with the underground practical scenario, this article sorts out the core content.

The most common faults of mine optical fiber junction boxes are signal interruption or attenuation, which are mainly caused by three types: first, contamination or loss of optical fiber connectors. Underground dust and moisture invade the box and attach to the connector end face, resulting in blocked signal transmission; second, seal failure. The seals of the junction box are aging or improperly installed, allowing moisture and dust to enter and corrode internal components; third, loose wiring or broken optical fibers. Underground vibration and pulling cause the optical fiber connector to fall off or the optical fiber to be damaged.

Fault diagnosis should follow the principle of "from outside to inside, from simple to complex": first check whether the external seal of the junction box is intact, whether there is damage or looseness; then open the box body to check whether the optical fiber connector is clean and firmly connected, and whether the optical fiber is bent or broken. An optical power meter can be used to quickly judge the degree of signal attenuation and locate the fault point.

Underground safety protection must be done during maintenance, and operation should be carried out after power failure. For contaminated connectors, the end face can be wiped with a special cleaning agent and reconnected and fixed; for seal failure, aging seals need to be replaced and the box screws tightened in accordance with specifications; for loose or broken optical fibers, the optical fibers need to be re-spliced and the connector protected well. After maintenance, the signal transmission should be tested to ensure no attenuation or interruption. Regularly check the sealing status and clean the surface dust in daily use to avoid repeated faults and ensure the stable and reliable operation of underground optical fiber communication.
